Photoshoot with Floor

Last weekend my best friend Floor and I decided to go on a picknick to catch up. Just the two of us, no husband, boyfriend or son around. It was so great to have an entire afternoon to ourselves! And we were quite popular, I believe we had about 6 or 7 dogs trying to see if they could steal some food.

On the spot we decided to do a mini maternity shoot of her pregnant belly at 31 weeks. Thanks so much for letting me practice, Floor :)

This was my first ever experience with shooting actual portraits, and sure, there's (a lot of) room for improvement, but I'm quite happy with how they turned out :)

I dream of...

I dream of...

... receiving a paycheck
... getting a new haircut
... a 50mm f/1.8 lens
... climbing a 6a route
... new running shoes
... running a 5k in under 30 minutes
... actually enjoying downward facing dog
... taking a course in writing in English
... learning to speak French
... peace of mind
... evening walks with my man
... owning a house, and making it a home
... starting a family
... spending time with my best friend
... filling my time with laughter and joy again
... dreaming big and out loud

Vacation pictures - Medebach

Our three-week vacation was made up of three different parts: Medebach, Germany with Imres family, Cologne, Germany and Hôny, Belgium with just the two of us, and Taizé, France with 5000 others. Imre and I decided to bring our big camera's for the first week, and ask his parents if they could bring them home with them (we picked them up last weekend). I'm so glad we did. Sure, there have been moments at which I missed it, but overall it was great not having to lug around our big, heavy camera's, especially in Cologne.

Here is the first batch of vacation pictures, all taken with my DSLR, during our first week.

Plans plans plans...

Being 'in between jobs' but not knowing when the next one will start, it's hard to make a proper schedule for the rest of the year. I don't know where I'll be in a month, let alone in 3 months. I'm pretty much a person that likes to know what she's dealing with, so that is quite a challenge for me. But I've decided to not fight it anymore, instead I'll just roll with it. It took me a year, but here we are.

So the plan is to just plan some stuff, and we'll see whether things will happen. Some of the things I'm looking forward to for the rest of 2013:

Of course the biggest plan for the coming months is finding a job. If you know of any labs or biotechnology related companies in the middle or south of the Netherlands that are looking for technicians and the like, please let me know. I may have overlooked them...

Travel journal: You've seen the bones of my travel journal last week, but that's just the start. I've picked out most of the pictures that I'll put in, and I have a big envelope full of stuff to go in. I'm super excited, and I can't wait to get my pictures printed.

Week in the life. September 9-15: Week in the life is really quite simple: you document everything you do for a week, in text and photos. I've been debating about doing this or not. I feel like my days are just boring and empty, so why document an entire week? But then I realized that I do actually do something all day, and this is what my life has been like for the last year. That it's not something to be ashamed of. So I'm being brave, and I'm joining in!

Wie is... de mol? September 13-15: Friends of friends of ours have organized a weekend playing the game IRL in Amsterdam, and Imre and I are participating. Since I'll be pretty busy trying to focus on the game that weekend, I'll probably shift the week in the life two days, so that I'll start with the weekend of 6-8 Sept.

Mystery shopping: For a few months I've been doing this and it's quite fun! Basically you get paid a small amount of money to go to certain stores and follow a scenario you've been given. It's a nice way to keep busy and I've collected enough money in the last few months to...

Buy new running shoes! And run a 5k on them. My running shoes are very ready to be replaced, and I'm very excited to get high quality new ones. I've been running on ok-quality ones so far, but I think my knees deserve high quality ones :) After I've gotten used to my new shoes I'm planning to sign up for a 5k (it's on my list of things to do before I turn 25!).

Reading: It seems I've beat my reading slump: yay! A few months ago I made a list of all the books I own that I haven't read yet. Turns out that's a list of 35 books. In the mean time I've read 5 of them, but the plan is to have read at least half of them by the end of the year.

And of course there are always a ton of creative ideas running circles inside my head :)

So yeah, I'm set!

I'm back!

I'm still trying to convince myself that being back home is a good thing. I miss Taizé. The daily structure, the prayers and the friends I made there.

Sunrise during my run in Taizé

To help myself get used to life at home again, I made a list of good things about being back:

1. Sleeping in my own bed.
2. Seeing my friends again after 3+ weeks
3. Cooking on a proper stove.
4. Drop! (the dutch word for licorice)
5. Proper tea, in a proper mug.
6. Being able to google something you NEED to know, because you can't sleep until you know it.
7. Catching up with blogs and Instagram
8. Talking Dutch again (Although the first days I had a hard time thinking of certain words in dutch, though)
9. Sitting on cushioned furniture. Pure bliss for the butt!
10. Being creative again.
11. Seeing how much our cactuses have grown.
12. Yoga and climbing.
13. Fresh, clean clothes without wrinkles from my backpack.
14. Yoghurt with granola for breakfast.
15. Making my travel journal come to life :)

It feels good to be adapting to my usual rhythm again. I have a ton of pictures to show you and a lot of stories to tell :)

Prepping my travel journal

I've mentioned before that I've prepped a travel journal for our trip to Germany and France. If everything goes as planned it'll be filled quite a bit by now, but I want to show you how I prepared my journal. The journal will be written in dutch, so I'll translate what I've written so far. (Oh, and sorry for the bad image quality, these were taken with my phone in baaaad light...)

This is my first travel journal, I've always made photobooks after the event happened. Or at least, I've always wanted to make them, because I just never got to it. So this year, inspired by  a recent post by Amy and an old post by Elise, I decided to try something different. I've got a travel journal ready to go. I won't be crafting the book together during the trip, since we're backpacking (I always have enought trouble getting everything I need into that darn bag). I will definitely be journaling, collecting ephemera along the way, and taking pictures with this journal in mind (which is an enthire new and fun challenge). I hope it will turn out as fun as I have in mind, and if not... Ah well, it's always better than nothing :)

The front and back are made out of a cardboard box I had lying around. I painted them a sort of rusty color, and added 'summer 2013' in dutch, with white paint. Not all cities and towns we will visit are known yet, but we do know we'll start in Medeback, Germany, and end in Taizé, France. So I wrote those on there already, and I'll add the rest after we get back.

To the inside of the cover I adhered an old map of parts of the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, France and even a bit of Switzerland. I had already decided I wanted to add a map, but I found out that the location of Taizé is visible at the very bottom of the map, as well as the rest of our destinations. Awesome. I'll be adding some sort of route on there when we get back. I'm still debating on how, though.

The first page shows my vacation-manifesto. Since this trip will be a little different from our usual vacations, I decided to write out some 'goals' for this trip. I ended up with ten things I would really like to do in these weeks:

Steefjes Plans

Enjoy
Play boardgames
Take pretty pictures
Read, read, read!
Hike
Run in nature
Time for the two of us
Eat good food
Get to know new people
Make memories

Let's Go!

The rest of the book is kind of boring so far: it's a mix of graph paper, lined paper, cardstock and envelopes. I've divided the trip into three parts using colors: yellow and green for the trip with Imres family, pink and red for the part where it's just the two of us, and light & dark blue for our week in Taizé.
For each day we're away I've added two pages: one lined and one graph paper. Perhaps I won't use all of them, and that would be just fine. But I figured this way I'll have enough paper if things turn into a journaling frenzy :)

The backside has Albert Heijn wrapping paper attatched to it. I liked its summer vibe :)

Right now the book is bound by 1 inch book rings. I won't be adding anything but words to it along the way, so for now that's just fine. When we get back I'll be adding a lot of photo's and ephemera I've collected, and I'll probably change the rings to 2 inch or maybe even bigger ones.

I'm super excited to fill my travel journal with stories along the way, and maybe even more excited to add the photo's and stuff once we get back. Perhaps I'll show the progress in the meantime, but I'll for sure be sharing this baby once it's done!
